September 21 (Renewables Now) - UK-based offshore engineering solutions provider Aquaterra Energy has teamed up with French green hydrogen company Lhyfe and international drilling contractor Borr Drilling Ltd (NYSE:BORR) to jointly work on a concept for green hydrogen production in the North Sea.

As part of the so-called Project Haldane, the trio will develop an industrial-scale offshore green hydrogen production concept that involves the deployment of electrolysers on a converted jack-up rig. The goal is to overcome the challenges around grid connectivity and intermittency of supply associated with remote locations.

The solution that will be developed will use existing platforms, pipelines, terminal infrastructure and offshore equipment that leverages existing infrastructure.

Lhyfe’s CEO Matthieu Guesne noted that over the past years the company has been working on different projects to adopt its production process offshore. “Offshore wind offers the greatest potential for sustainable hydrogen production because of the cost effectiveness that can be achieved through scalability and technological innovation,” he noted.
