Velodrome racing was held Thursday night so as not to clash with New Years Eve celebrations.

It was a windy start to the night and the skies looked fine for racing.

Unfortunately, the clouds rolled in and the rain stopped the night after one round of Scratch races and two Handicaps.

With limited racing over the last couple of weeks due to public holidays and the weather, it was decided to resume racing on Saturday afternoon so riders could get more track time.

Thankfully, only a handful of spits were felt on Saturday night and a full complement of racing was completed.

With the Rockhampton Cycling club’s biggest event of the year, The Rockhampton Cup on Wheels only two weeks away riders were keen to put their training to the test.

Previous Rockhampton cup winner Duncan Allen (2019 and 2020) travelled up from Bundaberg to spend time on the track refamiliarizing himself with the quirks of the 333m concrete velodrome and the wind that is inevitably a part of riding at Rockhampton.

2021 Rockhampton Cup winner Ray Smith, was also racing which made for a nice preview to what may eventuate in two weeks time.

Previous winners Clarry Horan and Kenrick Tucker were also at the track to watch the local racing, with Kenrick also riding the motorcycle for the Keirin races, just as he will for the Rockhampton Cup on Wheel Keirin races.

The Rockhampton Cup on Wheels is attracting riders from all over Australia with previous Capricornia Cup winner Lizanne Fox (2020) coming back again from Adelaide with the aim of regaining the trophy.

Gates will open on Friday, 14 January at .00pm for day one, with racing commencing at 6:00pm.

We return again on Saturday, 15 January at 2.00pm to race again at 4.00pm till late.

A full canteen will be operating on both days.

Gate entry is $5 Adult and $2 for school-age children.

We are currently working to refurbish our grandstands which has been supported by local councillor Cr Neil Fisher, so there will be plenty of quality seating for everyone.

And there is also lots of spare space around the track if you wish to bring your own chair.
