Mitsubishi used a live online broadcast to launch retail sales of the redesigned 2023 Outlander PHEV SUV.
The company has been teasing the new PHEV for more than a year with auto show displays and press previews. In fact, TheDetroitBureau.com has already been behind the wheel of the new electrified SUV.
However, the company’s flagship electrified three-row, seven-passenger family wagon had remained on the older Outlander platform even as the gas-powered Outlander was updated in 2021 for the 2022 model year. Now the PHEV has been brought up to date with the same platform, interior and bodywork as the gas model.
“We were the first PHEV SUV to market when the car launched globally in 2012, and now we’re adding more power, more range, more inspiring technology, and more convenience, providing an even better value for owners and resetting the standard by which all PHEVs should be measured,” said Mark Chaffin, CEO of Mitsubishi Motors North America.
The big news with the new Outlander PHEV is increased electric-only range. The outgoing model offered 24 miles, while the 2023 will travel up to 38 miles on its new 20kWh battery pack. That’s enough range to cover daily driving for the vast majority of American drivers, because the national average is 29 miles a day. Combined with the gas engine, total range on the new Outlander PHEV is up to 420 miles.
New for 2023, the Outlander PHEV will also be available (in the upper trim levels) with DC Fast Charging capability. Using DC charging, the Outlander will charge from zero to 80% in 38 minutes. The Outlander can also charge up overnight using Level 2 home-installation chargers, or a standard 120-Volt outlet.
Among the many updates designed to keep the Outlander PHEV up to date, the new model also supports 1-pedal driving, which is usually reserved for BEVs. The increased regeneration used in 1-pedal systems can maximize the Outlander’s all-electric range.
The 2023 Outlander also benefits from updates to Mitsubishi’s Super All-Wheel Control (S-AWC) implementation of all-wheel drive. Like other brands, the Mitsubishi system for the PHEV involves a twin-motor system, utilizing the gasoline engine and front motor to drive the front wheels, and a stand-alone rear-mounted motor to drive the rear wheels. The combined system yields 248 horsepower and 332 pound-feet of torque. All Outlander PHEV trims come with S-AWC as standard equipment.
The 2023 Outlander PHEV is available in seven distinct trims, starting with the base ES at $41,190, including destination fee. Even the base trim is well-equipped with advanced driver assistance features and a 12.3-inch driver information display and 8-inch infotainment screen.
The SE and SE-Tech trims come in at $43,490 and $45,490 respectively. SE trim adds a long list of features including 20-inch alloy wheels, heated front seats, adaptive cruise control, a 9-inch infotainment screen, and more. The optional Tech Package includes a power panoramic sunroof, auto-dimming rear view mirror, and a Bose 9-speaker premium audio system.
The SEL trim adds DC Fast Charging, leather, heated rear seats, and more for $46,790, while the SEL Touring trim adds the panoramic sunroof, head-up display, Bose audio and heated steering wheel for $48,990. The SEL Premium trim includes all that, plus semi-aniline leather, a black roof, and front seat massage for $49,490.
The top 40th Anniversary Edition of the Outlander PHEV adds on special black diamond paint with a bronze-toned roof and limited 40th Anniversary badging for $51,340.
